Both the Ukrainian and Jewish people suffered at the hands of different dictators in the middle of the 20th Century, with millions being slaughtered. Many from those communities have found their homes in Derby.
The Hoverla Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and The Klatsh Klezmer (Jewish) band were both at the HMD QUAD event in 2013 playing separately. After the event, and in the area outside of Cinema 1, they decided to try and play together to entertain the people in the bar area. It was spontaneous, no rehearsals – but it worked! And so “Bridges” was born. The name was coined as a simple testament to the use of music to connect communities.
“Bridges” are now regular participants at the HMD event, and have also performed at the Multi-Faith Centre on a number of occasions.
A packed Ukrainian Community Centre on Charnwood Street enjoyed music from the combined band, together with music and dance from both traditions. The band was also accompanied by other musicians from across the country, and played with great energy and accomplishment. A fun evening to end a serious and important week.
