Multi-Faith Centre: Encounters- a 7 part series discovering the basics of the world religions.
Religious intolerance is a prominent issue in our society. There were 3,254 recorded incidences of religious hate crime in England and Wales in 2014/15. This is a rise of 18% on the previous year. What then should we do as people who want to understand religion and belief? Will discussions regarding faith and belief always focus on differences and lead to conflict or can we come together in a spirit of learning, celebrate commonality and reframe differences in a positive light?
This Encounters series will provide an opportunity to experience informal visits to different places of worship and to discover more about faith and festivities.
The Multi-Faith Centre at the University of Derby will be hosting a 7 part series, running from January to April as part of its Spring 2016 programme. Each evening will involve a visit to a place of worship, where a host will support our exploration of central ideas of faith, practice and worship.
This series will provide an opportunity for people to Encounter Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism and the Bahá’í faith, with a celebration evening at the end of the series where food and music can be enjoyed amongst new friendships.
