Credible Sainsbury’s sources have now contradicted Cllr Ingall’s version of events which led to his lifetime ban from their Osmaston Park Road store
He maintained in the Derby Telegraph- 25/11/2025.that he had made a “mistake” implying that it was a one-off, human error; something which can happen to anyone. Sainsbury’s has confirmed that they were monitoring him over a period of time and observed a systematic pattern of theft. He exploited the vulnerabilities of the self scan process to shoplift expensive food and drink products.
His apprehension by Sainsbury’s security staff a few weeks ago, was the end point of their thorough investigation and not a sign of an extremely low tolerance to innocent “mistakes”.

Sainsbury’s do not have a policy to issue lifetime bans for “mistakes”. The imposition of such bans is not taken lightly and is a consequence of sustained and intentional theft.
The previous Derby News article “Cllr Ingall admits to being banned from Sainsbury’s for “not paying for items” highlighted that his version of events did not make sense. This has now been clarified.
This is now an issue for the residents of Chellaston and Shelton Lock, fellow Cllrs, the Council’s Standards Committee and the Council’s Legal team.
